Foley.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Father is patting his shoulder<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And lifting his grip;<br\/>Proud of him as he grows older,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;(But biting his lip.)<br\/>Aunty improving his going<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;By giving advice.<br\/>And mother her tears overflowing,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And wiping her eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Father pretending to joke him<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;While saying goodbye;<br\/>Sister seems trying to choke him<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;While fixing his tie;<br\/>Uncle is chaffing and winking,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Disguising his sighs,<br\/>While mother is standing and thinking<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And wiping her eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Old chums are wishing successes<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And shaking his hand;<br\/>Girls with pink bows and white dresses<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Are hoping he\u2019ll land<br\/>Top o\u2019 the heap in his classes\u2014<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;He can if he tries\u2014<br\/>And mother\u2019s white handkerchief passes<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;While wiping her eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Towser\u2019s tail wagging and shaking,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;He must understand;<br\/>Little Tob\u2014brother is taking<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Him fast by the hand;<br\/>Standing on tip toes to kiss him<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And wiping goodbyes,<br\/>And mother\u2014who knows how she\u2019ll miss him?\u2014<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Just wiping her eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Father is counseling to him<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Of college and den.<br\/>Boy, as we yesterday knew him,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;But never again.<br\/>Mother once more may caress him,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And then the goodbyes<br\/>And murmur and whisper \u201cGod bless him!\u201d<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;While wiping her eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Grand Forks Daily Herald, September 21, 1914.
