By Emma Lazarus.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;O World-God, give me Wealth!&#8221; the Egyptian cried.<br\/>His prayer was granted. High as heaven, behold<br\/>Palace and Pyramid; the brimming tide<br\/>Of lavish Nile washed all his land with gold.<br\/>Armies of slaves toiled ant-wise at his feet,<br\/>World-circling traffic roared through mart and street,<br\/>His priests were gods, his spice-balmed kings enshrined,<br\/>Set death at naught in rock-ribbed charnels deep.<br\/>Seek Pharaoh&#8217;s race to-day and we shall find<br\/>Rust and the moth, silence and dusty sleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;O World-God, give me beauty!&#8221; cried the Greek.<br\/>His prayer was granted. All the earth became<br\/>Plastic and vocal to his sense; each peak,<br\/>Each grove, each stream, quick with Promethean flame,<br\/>Peopled the world with imaged grace and light.<br\/>The lyre was his, and his the breathing might<br\/>Of the immortal marble, his the play<br\/>Of diamond-pointed thought and golden tongue.<br\/>Go seek the sunshine race. Ye find today<br\/>A broken column and a lute unstrung.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;O World-God, give me Power!&#8221; the Roman cried.<br\/>His prayer was granted. The vast world was chained<br\/>A captive to the chariot of his pride.<br\/>The blood of myriad provinces was drained<br\/>To feed that fierce, insatiable red heart\u2014<br\/>Invulnerably bulwarked every part<br\/>With serried legions and with close-meshed Code,<br\/>Within, the burrowing worm had gnawed its home:<br\/>A roofless ruin stands where once abode<br\/>The imperial race of everlasting Rome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;O Godhead, give me Truth!&#8221; the Hebrew cried.<br\/>His prayer was granted. He became the slave<br\/>Of the Idea, a pilgrim far and wide,<br\/>Cursed, hated, spurned, and scourged with none to save.<br\/>The Pharaohs knew him, and when Greece beheld,<br\/>His wisdom wore the hoary crown of Eld.<br\/>Beauty he hath forsworn, and wealth and power.<br\/>Seek him today, and find in every land.<br\/>No fire consumes him, neither floods devour;<br\/>Immortal through the lamp within his hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Grand Forks Daily Herald, September 24, 1914.
