{"id":8465,"date":"2022-09-26T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-09-26T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newspaperhistory.com\/?p=8465"},"modified":"2022-09-26T01:00:00","modified_gmt":"2022-09-26T05:00:00","slug":"retribution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/desperaudio.com\/newspaperpoetry\/retribution\/","title":{"rendered":"Retribution"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>From the <a href=\"https:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/lccn\/sn99021999\/1914-09-26\/ed-1\/seq-8\/\">Omaha Daily Bee, September 26, 1914<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>When Peace her olive branch held out,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And wooed the nations to her arms,<br\/>They rudely drove her from their side,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And turned their backs upon her charms.<br\/>In vain she pleaded to be heard,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;In vain she tried the world to save<br\/>From all the horrors of grim war,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;That opened up a nation\u2019s grave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>So, driven forth, she fled away<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;No more to come with outstretched hand,<br\/>But to remain across the seas<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Safe sheltered in a friendly land.<br\/>And now they sigh and long for her,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And strain their horror-stricken eyes<br\/>To catch a glimpse of her white robe,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Until the hope within them dies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>But now \u2019tis they who must seek her,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And toilsome is the dreadful way,<br\/>Through carnage fields and burning homes,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Past piles of dead and savage fray,<br\/>Knee deep in bloody rivers\u2019 flow,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Through scenes whose terrors never cease,<br\/>This is the way they now must go,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The nations, when they seek for peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Omaha Daily Bee, September 26, 1914.
