By Robert Burns Wilson.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Such is the death the soldier dies;<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;He falls, the column speeds away;<br\/>Upon the dabbled grass he lies,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;His brave heart following still, the fray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>The smoke wreaths drift among the trees,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The battle storms along the hill;<br\/>The glint of distant arms he sees,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;He hears his comrades shouting still.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>A glimpse of far-borne flags, that fade<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And vanish in the roiling din;<br\/>He knows the sweeping charge is made,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The cheering lines are closing in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Unmindful of his mortal wound,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;He faintly calls and seeks to rise;<br\/>But weakness drags him to the ground.<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Such is the death the soldier dies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Newark Evening Star, October 5, 1914.
