By Madison Cawein.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>The twilight witch comes with her stars<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And strews them through the blue;<br\/>Then breathes below the sunset bars<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;A breath of meadow rue;<br\/>She trails her veil across the skies<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And mutters to the trees,<br\/>And in the wood, with firefly eyes<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;She wakes the mysteries.<br\/>The twilight witch, with elf and fay,<br\/>Is coming down the slumber way,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Sleep, my dearie, sleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>The twilight witch, with crescent moon,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Stoops in the wooded hill;<br\/>She answers to the owlet\u2019s tune,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And to the whippoorwill.<br\/>She leans above the reedy pool<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And wakes the drowsy frog,<br\/>And with the toadstool, dim and cool,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Rims gray the old dead log.<br\/>The twilight witch comes stealing down<br\/>To take you off to slumber town.<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Sleep, my dearie, sleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>The twilight witch, with wind-like tread,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Has entered in the room;<br\/>She steals around your trundle bed<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And whispers in the gloom;<br\/>She says, \u201cI brought my steed along,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;My faery steed of gleams,<br\/>To bear you, like a breath of song,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Into the land of dreams.<br\/>I am the witch who takes your hand<br\/>And leads you off to faeryland,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The far-off land of sleep.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Omaha Daily Bee, October 10, 1914.
