By Matthew Arnold.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Weary of myself, and sick of asking<br\/>What I am, and what I ought to be,<br\/>At this vessel\u2019s prow I stand, which bears me<br\/>Forward, forward, o\u2019er the starlit sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>And a look of passionate desire<br\/>O\u2019er the sea and to the stars I send;<br\/>\u201cYe who from childhood up have calm\u2019d me,<br\/>Calm me, ah, compose me to the end!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAh, once more,\u201d I cried, \u201cye stars, ye waters,<br\/>On my heart your mighty charm renew;<br\/>Still, still let me as I gaze upon you<br\/>Feel my soul becoming vast like you!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>From the intense, clear, star-sown vault of heaven,<br\/>Over the lit sea\u2019s unquiet way,<br\/>In the rustling night air came the answer\u2014<br\/>\u201cWould\u2019st thou be as these are? Live as they.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUnaffrighted by the silence round them,<br\/>Undistracted by the sights they see,<br\/>These demand not that the things without them<br\/>Yield them love, amusement, sympathy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd with joy the stars perform their shining,<br\/>And the sea its long moon-silver\u2019d roll;<br\/>For self-poised they live, nor pine with noting<br\/>All the fever of some differing soul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBounded by themselves, and unregardful<br\/>In what state God\u2019s other works may be,<br\/>In their own tasks all their powers pouring,<br\/>These attain the mighty life we see.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>O air-born voice!
