Thomas.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>They were foes as they fell in that frontier fight,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;They were friends as they lay with their wounds unbound,<br\/>Waiting the dawn of their last morning light.<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;It was silence all, save a shuddering sound<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;From the souls of the dying that rose around;<br\/>And the heart of the one to the other cried,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;As closer they drew, and their arms enwound,<br\/>\u201cThere will be no war on the Other Side.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>As the souls of the dying mounted high<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;It seemed they could hear the long farewell!<br\/>Then together they spake, and they questioned why\u2014<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Since they hated not\u2014why this evil befell<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And neither the Frank nor the German could tell<br\/>Wherefore themselves and their countrymen died.<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;But they said that hereafter in peace they should dwell\u2014<br\/>\u201cThere will be no war on the Other Side.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>As they languished there on that field accursed,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;With their wounds unbound, in their mortal pain,<br\/>Spake one to the other, \u201cI faint from thirst!\u201d<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And the other made answer, \u201cWhat drops remain<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;In my water flask thou shalt surely drain!\u201d<br\/>As he lifted the flask the other replied,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;\u201cI pledge thee in this till we meet again\u2014<br\/>There will be no war on the Other Side!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>And it came to pass as the night wore deep<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;That fever through all their veins was fanned,<br\/>So that visions were theirs (yet not from sleep)<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And each was flown to his own loved land.<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;But rousing again, one murmured, \u201cThy hand!<br\/>Thou art my brother\u2014naught shall divide;<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Something went wrong, but understand,<br\/>There will be no war on the Other Side.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Grand Forks Daily Herald, October 24, 1914.
