By Helen Hay Whitney.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>They lit for me no torches<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;When I came home to die,<br\/>For I had sinned against the land<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Where soon I low must lie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Black darkness hung about me;<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The dark woods knew my shame;<br\/>The little lovely leaves drew back<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And shivered as I came.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>I, who had laughed and loved them,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Who solved their secret streams,<br\/>Forgetting honor, grasped for gain<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;In barter with my dreams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>From man I ask no quarter,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;No pardon for my birth;<br\/>But O deep heart, betrayed and wronged,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Forgive me, Mother Earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From The Topeka State Journal, October 28, 1914.
