{"id":8587,"date":"2022-11-02T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-11-02T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newspaperhistory.com\/?p=8587"},"modified":"2022-11-02T01:00:00","modified_gmt":"2022-11-02T05:00:00","slug":"under-harvest-moon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/desperaudio.com\/newspaperpoetry\/under-harvest-moon\/","title":{"rendered":"Under Harvest Moon"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>From <a href=\"https:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/lccn\/sn85038615\/1914-11-02\/ed-1\/seq-6\/\">The Times Dispatch, November 2, 1914<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Last year the harvest moon looked down<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;On bounteous fields of grain,<br\/>A peaceful scene where lovers strolled<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Along the shady lane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>In happy homes the mothers sang<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Their evening lullaby,<br\/>And little children had no fear<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Of danger lurking nigh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>But now the demon war is loosed<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And terrors fill the night,<br\/>The dangers of the burning home,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The dangers of the fight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Mothers and children hide and wait,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;They listen, fear, and pray,<br\/>While shells are bursting all around<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And armies pass their way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Tonight upon the harvest field,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The moon is shining bright,<br\/>Where soldier forms lie mute and still<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;With faces ghastly white.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Oh, what a reaping!
