By Vina Sheard.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Summer is past for the little leaves,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;So the wind by night and day<br\/>Gathers them close, while he sighs and grieves,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And carries them all away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Leaves that are yellow and beaten gold,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Leaves of a passionate red,<br\/>Leaves that are broken and brown and old,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Leaves that are withered and dead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Some he will blow to the mad sea waves,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And in the ebb and flow,<br\/>They will reach the green forgotten graves<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Of the drowned that lie below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Some he will drift to the place of sleep,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The great brown Mother of rest,<br\/>And to Slumber, dreamless, sweet and deep,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;She will hush them on her breast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>For the fleeting days of blue and gold<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;They will fret no more or sigh\u2014<br\/>They will not know it grows dark and cold,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Or stir when the rain sweeps by.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>And none shall unfold the mystery<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Of the things that come and go,<br\/>Save only He who holdeth the sea,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And maketh the winds to blow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Grand Forks Daily Herald, November 17, 1914.
