By Bennett Chapple.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Gone is the vaunted banner that proclaimed the world for peace,<br\/>The mask is torn asunder and all Hell has seen release.<br\/>The heat of age-old anger now has cracked the thin veneer,<br\/>Ten million men are targets\u2014and all Europe is a bier.<br\/>The mighty guns are booming in their terrifying voice,<br\/>They cut the field like reapers\u2014and the soldiers have no choice.<br\/>They face the rain of bullets, and with manhood\u2019s stalwart zeal<br\/>They march with very souls aflame through jaws of glistening steel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Theirs but to fall in windrows deep, cut down by scythes of lead,<br\/>Till truce piles high the harvest there in gory stacks of dead.<br\/>Napoleon took two million lives before he drank his dregs;<br\/>\u201cTo make an omelet,\u201d he said, \u201cyou have to break some eggs.\u201d<br\/>Ten million men now face the guns\u2014an omelet, in truth\u2014<br\/>Ten million sturdy warriors so full of strength and youth,<br\/>Ten million in uniform, stirred to heroic deeds,<br\/>Ten million men in league with death while Christ in pity pleads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>The proud world hangs its heartsick head at such a gruesome sight;<br\/>The grim old skeleton of war once more has come to light,<br\/>And savagery has brushed aside all civilizing creed,<br\/>Turned back the clock a hundred years to let the nations bleed.<br\/>What is this pride of nations that will pay such awful price?<br\/>What is this commerce of the world that asks such sacrifice?<br\/>Oh, is it worth the candle that the sombre altars light<br\/>When men\u2014perhaps a million men\u2014are victims of the fight?<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Albuquerque Morning Journal, November 20, 1914.
