By George Sterling.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>At twilight time, when the lamps are lit,<br\/>Father Coyote comes to sit<br\/>At the chaparral\u2019s edge, on the mountain side\u2014<br\/>Comes to listen and to deride<br\/>The rancher\u2019s hound and the rancher\u2019s son,<br\/>The passerby and everyone.<br\/>And we pause at milking time to hear<br\/>His reckless caroling, shrill and clear\u2014<br\/>His terse and swift and valorous troll,<br\/>Ribald, rollicking, scornful, droll,<br\/>As one might sing in coyotedom:<br\/>\u201cYo! ho! ho! and a bottle of rum!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Yet well I wot there is little ease<br\/>Where the turkeys roost in the pi\u00f1on trees,<br\/>But mute forebodings, canny and grim,<br\/>As they shift and shiver along the limb,<br\/>And the dog flings back an answer brief<br\/>(Curse o\u2019 the honest man on the thief),<br\/>And the cat, till now intent to rove,<br\/>Stalks to her lair by the kitchen stove;<br\/>Not that SHE fears the rogue on the hill;<br\/>But\u2014no mice remain, and\u2014the night is chill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>And now, like a watchman of the skies,<br\/>Whose glance to a thousand valleys flies,<br\/>The moon glares over the granite ledge\u2014<br\/>Pared a slice on its upper edge.<br\/>And Father Coyote waits no more,<br\/>Knowing that down on the valley floor,<br\/>In a sandy nook, all cool and white,<br\/>The rabbits play and the rabbits fight,<br\/>Flopping, nimble, scurrying,<br\/>Careless now with the surge of spring\u2014<br\/>Furry lover, alack! alas!<br\/>Skims your fate o\u2019er the mountain grass!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Albuquerque Morning Journal, November 22, 1914.
