By Philander Johnson.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>My Uncle Jim, he has a clock.<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;He bought it years ago.<br\/>It used to sound a smart \u201ctick tock,\u201d<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;But now it\u2019s kept for show.<br\/>It used to move with nimble hands<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;To count the minutes o\u2019er,<br\/>But now its record always stands<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;At strictly half-past four.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s weary now,\u201d said Uncle Jim.<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;\u201cIt did its work right well;<br\/>And fading into memories dim<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Are tales it used to tell.<br\/>It sort of halted on the way<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;It went so well of yore.<br\/>And, finally, it stopped one day<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Right there, at half-past four.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat is the hour when I awoke<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;To greet the dawn anew,<br\/>And next, the hour that softly spoke<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Of toiling almost through.<br\/>My old clock tells of early day<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Of the rest in store;<br\/>And so I simply let it stay<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Content at half-past four.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Evening Star, November 27, 1914.
