When I comes home from work at night
    All tired out from minin\u2019 coal,
An\u2019 black an\u2019 sweaty to the sight
    I ain\u2019t th\u2019 gladdest kind of soul;
Th\u2019 world don\u2019t make no hit with me,
    I\u2019m mighty weary with my lot,
An\u2019 every bloomin\u2019 thing I see
    Just seems to feed th\u2019 grouch I\u2019ve got.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I cusses at my daily work,
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0I damn the pitboss to the pit,
I thinks of all th\u2019 dust an\u2019 murk
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Of minin\u2019\u2014an\u2019 I cusses it;
I thinks, \u201cUs miners ain\u2019t no men,
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0We\u2019re pore dumb beasts that\u2019s hitched and drove;\u201d
I starts once more to swear\u2014an\u2019 then
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0I smells th\u2019 supper on th\u2019 stove!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It mebbe ain\u2019t so very much
    (A miner ain\u2019t no millionaire),
But when I scents that stew an\u2019 such
    I\u2014well, I half forgets to swear.
From worries an\u2019 from troubles, too,
    My thoughts begin to stray an\u2019 rove,
An\u2019 life assumes a dif\u2019runt hue,
    When I smells supper on th\u2019 stove!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An\u2019 when they brings that supper in
    An\u2019 wife an\u2019 kids an\u2019 me sets down,
I finds a sort of pleasant grin
    Has chased away my ugly frown;
I puts away all thought of strife,
    My appetite I gives the call,
An\u2019 thinks, \u201cOh well, this miner\u2019s life
