{"id":8941,"date":"2022-12-21T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-12-21T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newspaperhistory.com\/?p=8941"},"modified":"2022-12-21T01:00:00","modified_gmt":"2022-12-21T06:00:00","slug":"little-johnnies-fears","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/desperaudio.com\/newspaperpoetry\/little-johnnies-fears\/","title":{"rendered":"Little Johnnie\u2019s Fears"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>From the <a href=\"https:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/lccn\/sn91064011\/1914-12-21\/ed-1\/seq-7\/\">Newark Evening Star, December 21, 1914<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Where we used to live we had<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;A fireplace, big and wide,<br\/>An\u2019 all that Santy had to do<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Was hold his breath an\u2019 slide,<br\/>An\u2019 squeeze hisself until he fit<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The hole, an\u2019 then jest drop\u2014<br\/>An\u2019 he knowed where the stockin\u2019s was,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;\u2018Cause that was where he\u2019d stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Where we used to live it was<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;No trick for him to climb<br\/>Up to the chimbly on the roof<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;An\u2019 find us, Christmas-time;<br\/>But now I\u2019m worryin\u2019 for fear<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;He won\u2019t know where he\u2019s at,<br\/>Or mebbe can\u2019t get in at all!<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;We\u2019re livin\u2019 in a flat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re livin\u2019 in a flat, an\u2019 say,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;You mus\u2019 be mos\u2019 polite,<br\/>Or else the janitor he\u2019ll go<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;An\u2019 lock you out at night!<br\/>There ain\u2019t no chimbly to our house<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Where Santy Claus can slide\u2014<br\/>There ain\u2019t no fireplace\u2014just a pipe<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;About two inches wide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>They heat our flat with steam\u2014that\u2019s why<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I\u2019m afraid he can\u2019t get in<br\/>With all his toys, an\u2019 drums an\u2019 things,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Unless he\u2019s awful thin;<br\/>An\u2019 how\u2019s he gon\u2019 to wiggle out<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;When he gets in?
