Barker.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>To the desk of his teacher a little lad came,<br\/>With his eyes downcast, and his cheeks aflame,<br\/>And he said in a trembling and hesitant tone,<br\/>\u201cI\u2019ve spoiled this leaf; may I have a new one?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>In place of the sheet so stained and blotted,<br\/>She gave him a new one, clean, unspotted.<br\/>His tear-stained face she lifted, then smiled<br\/>And said, \u201cTry to do better now, my child.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>To my Teacher I went on my knees, alone;<br\/>The days had passed by and another year flown;<br\/>\u201cDear Father, hast Thou not a new leaf for me?<br\/>I\u2019ve blotted this other so sadly, I see.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>In place of the old year so soiled and blotted<br\/>God gave me a new one, clean, unspotted.<br\/>Then into my sorrowing heart He smiled,<br\/>Saying, \u201cTry to do better now, my child.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Grand Forks Daily Herald, December 30, 1914.
