By Berton Braley.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>I have known joy and woe and toil and fight;<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I have lived largely, I have dreamed and planned,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And Time, the Sculptor, with a master hand<br\/>Upon my face has wrought for all men\u2019s sight<br\/>The lines and seams of Life, of growth and blight,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Of struggle and of service and command;<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And now you show me This\u2014this waxen, bland<br\/>And placid\u2014unlined, untroubled, white!<br\/>This is not I\u2014this fatuous face you show<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Retouched and prettified and smoothed to please.<br\/>Put back the wrinkles and the lines I know,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I have spent blood and brain achieving these;<br\/>Out of the pain, the sorrow and the wrack,<br\/>They are my scars of battle\u2014Put Them Back!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From The Birmingham Age Herald, January 5, 1915.
