Haskins.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>And now, at last, you\u2019ve got to go,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I\u2019ve come to say good-by.<br\/>Forgive an old man\u2019s weakness and<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The tears which fill my eyes.<br\/>For five-and-twenty years I\u2019ve played<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Upon your friendly keys,<br\/>Which, yellowed \u2018neath their tuneful tasks<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Are rich in memories.<br\/>My little children, all of them,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Have learned to play on you;<br\/>One key was cracked by Johnny\u2019s tooth,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;One scratched by Baby Sue.<br\/>And one note never has regained<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Its old sonorous tone<br\/>Since Tom, to stop his \u201cpractice,\u201d went<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And hit it with a stone.<br\/>I lift your lid, the rusty strings<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;With ghostly echoes start<br\/>To quiver with the long farewell<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;That\u2019s bursting from my heart.<br\/>Your sounding board, melodic in<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The long, long yesterday,<br\/>Vibrates with Tosti\u2019s sweet \u201cGood Night\u201d<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;My wife so loved to play.<br\/>Like sad handshake a final chord<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Is lovingly caressed.<br\/>May your career now ended be,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And this your last long rest!<br\/>I cannot bear the thought of you<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;By fond use made divine,<br\/>Responding to the ruthless touch<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Of other hands than mine;<br\/>I cannot think of cheap dance hall,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;All smoke and heat and beer,<br\/>With drunken fingers banging at<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The keys I hold so dear;<br\/>But rather may you stand, forgot,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;So harmonies may fill<br\/>The twilight of your life, safe in<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;A warehouse, cool and still.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From The Sun, January 10, 1915.
