By John Boyle O\u2019Reilly.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>I am tired of planning and toiling<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;In the crowded hives of men;<br\/>Heart-weary of building and spoiling<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And spoiling and building again.<br\/>And I long for the dear old river,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Where I dreamed my youth away,<br\/>For a dreamer lives forever,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And a toiler dies in a day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>I am sick of the showy seeming<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Of a life that is half a lie;<br\/>Of the faces lined with scheming<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;In the throng that hurries by.<br\/>From the sleepless thought\u2019s endeavor,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I would go where the children play;<br\/>For a dreamer lives forever<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And a thinker dies in a day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>I can feel no pride, but pity,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;For the burdens the rich endure;<br\/>There is nothing sweet in the city<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;But the patient lives of the poor.<br\/>Oh, the little hands too skillful,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And the child mind choked with weeds!<br\/>The daughter\u2019s heart grown willful,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And the father\u2019s heart that bleeds!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>No, no! from the street\u2019s rude bustle,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;From trophies of mart and stage,<br\/>I would fly to the wood\u2019s low rustle<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And the meadow\u2019s kindly page.<br\/>Let me dream as of yore by the river<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And be loved for the dream alway;<br\/>For a dreamer lives forever,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And a thinker dies in a day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Grand Forks Daily Herald, January 14, 1915.
