Lowater.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Once I thanked God for many a glittering thing<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Which now I know was worthless and which passed<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;With things forgotten and behind me cast,<br\/>As I moved onward, borne by time\u2019s swift wing,<br\/>But never thought I then that work could be<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;God\u2019s gift, but rather, punishment it seemed;<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And often in my lonely hours I dreamed<br\/>Of days when from its bond I should be free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>But now I know that work is man\u2019s best friend,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Heaven\u2019s highest blessing to a world like this;<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And now I ask no longer ease and bliss,<br\/>But only this: \u201cGive me until the end<br\/>Strength for the needed toil as each day passes by.<br\/>When I can work no longer let me die.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Newark Evening Star, January 16, 1915.
