{"id":9145,"date":"2023-01-22T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-01-22T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newspaperhistory.com\/?p=9145"},"modified":"2023-01-22T01:00:00","modified_gmt":"2023-01-22T06:00:00","slug":"the-glorious-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/desperaudio.com\/newspaperpoetry\/the-glorious-day\/","title":{"rendered":"The Glorious Day"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>From <a href=\"https:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/lccn\/sn82016014\/1915-01-22\/ed-1\/seq-4\/\">The Topeka State Journal, January 22, 1915<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Gray dawn, and the boom of a fortress gun;<br\/>A cry of death, and the fight\u2019s begun.<br\/>The grass is wet with the night dew yet;<br\/>It will drown in blood ere the sun has set.<br\/>The killers start up from their beds in the clay,<br\/>Their faces as gray as the new born day.<br\/>Just a moment they shrink, for the morn is chill,<br\/>But their hearts leap quick, and their pulses thrill<br\/>As they lunge to their work, and they kill with a will,<br\/>And they kill and they kill and they kill and they kill\u2014<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;For the fight is on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>High noon, and the din of a thousand tones;<br\/>Curses and shrieks and sobs and moans;<br\/>Clashing of steel and the rattle of guns,<br\/>And the drip, drip, drip where the red blood runs.<br\/>Stench on the air, and the vultures come;<br\/>The starved dogs wait and the green flies hum.<br\/>Death in a hundred shapes, death everywhere,<br\/>On plain and hill, in the mine, in the air!<br\/>And the killers toil on, and they kill with a will.<br\/>And they kill and they kill and they kill and they kill\u2014<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;For the fight goes on!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Black night, and the killers lie down from their toil,<br\/>Throw their blood stained arms on the blood soaked soil;<br\/>And they sleep and they dream of their unfinished work,<br\/>While the starved dogs gorge in the gloom and the murk.<br\/>And the chief of the killers walks forth on the plain,<br\/>Where he stumbles and falls on the forms of the slain.<br\/>And his tin medals rattle, the baubles he\u2019s won,<br\/>And he curses the dead, but he mutters, \u201cWell done!<br\/>\u2019Twas a glorious day, but there\u2019s work to do still,<br\/>And we\u2019ll kill and we\u2019ll kill and we\u2019ll kill and we\u2019ll kill<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Till the last fight\u2019s won!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From The Topeka State Journal, January 22, 1915.
