By William Cowper.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>When the British warrior queen,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Bleeding from the Roman rods,<br\/>Sought, with an indignant mien,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Counsel of her country\u2019s gods,<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Sage beneath the spreading oak<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Sat the Druid, hoary chief;<br\/>Every burning word he spoke<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Full of rage, and full of grief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPrincess! If our aged eyes<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Weep upon thy matchless wrongs,<br\/>\u2019Tis because resentment ties<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;All the terror of our tongues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRome shall perish\u2014write that word<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;In the blood that she has spilt\u2014<br\/>Perish, hopeless and abhorred,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Deep in ruin as in guilt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRome, for empire far renowned,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Tramples on a thousand states;<br\/>Soon her pride shall kiss the ground\u2014<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Hark! The Gaul is at her gates!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOther Romans shall arise,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Heedless of a soldier\u2019s name;<br\/>Sounds, not arms, shall win the prize,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Harmony the path to fame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThen the progeny that springs<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;From the forests of our land,<br\/>Armed with thunder, clad with wings,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Shall a wider world command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRegions Caesar never knew<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Thy posterity shall sway;<br\/>Where his eagles never flew,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;None invincible as they.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Such the bard\u2019s prophetic words,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Pregnant with celestial fire,<br\/>Bending as he swept the chords<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Of his sweet but awful lyre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>She, with all a monarch\u2019s pride<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Felt them in her bosom glow;<br\/>Rushed to battle, fought and died;<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Dying, hurled them at the foe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRuffians, pitiless as proud!<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Heaven awards the vengeance due;<br\/>Empire is on us bestowed,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Shame and ruin wait for you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From The Birmingham Age Herald, February 1, 1915.
