By John Osborn Sargent.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>On the field in front of Frastenz, drawn up in battle array,<br\/>Stretched spear on spear in a crescent, the German army lay;<br\/>Behind a wall of bucklers stood bosoms steeled with pride,<br\/>And a stiff wood of lances that all assaults defied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Oh, why, ye men of Switzerland, from your Alpine summits sally,<br\/>And armed with clubs and axes descend into the valley?<br\/>\u201cThe wood just grown at Frastenz with our axes we would fell,<br\/>To build homesteads from its branches, where Liberty may dwell.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>The Swiss on the German lances rush with impetuous shock;<br\/>It is spear on spear in all quarters\u2014they are dashed like waves from a rock.<br\/>His teeth then gnashed the Switzer, and the mocking German cried:<br\/>\u201cSee how the snout of the greyhound is pierced by the hedgehog\u2019s hide!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Like a song of resurrection, then sounded from the ranks:<br\/>\u201cIllustrious shade, Von Winkelried! To thee I render thanks;<br\/>Thou beckonest, I obey thee! Up, Swiss, and follow me!\u201d<br\/>Thus the voice of Henry Wohlleb from the ranks rang loud and free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>From its shaft he tore the banner and twined it round his breast,<br\/>And hot with lust of death on the serried lances pressed;<br\/>His red eyes from their sockets like flaming torches glared,<br\/>And in front, in place of the banner, waved the locks of his snow white hair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>The spears of six knights together\u2014in his hands he seizes all\u2014<br\/>And thereon thrusts his bosom\u2014there\u2019s a breach in the lances\u2019 wall.<br\/>With vengeance fired, the Switzers storm the battle\u2019s perilous ridge,<br\/>And the corpse of Henry Wohlleb to their vengeance is the bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From The Birmingham Age Herald, February 2, 1915.
