By Peter Reed.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>They sing of the men who build the mills<br\/>And girdle the earth with steel;<br\/>Who fill the hour and wield the power<br\/>That moulds the public weal.<br\/>Honor to them that in honor do<br\/>The work that the world must need,<br\/>And yet in chief I hold a brief<br\/>For the Man Who Didn\u2019t Succeed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u2019Tis not to excuse the indolent;<br\/>Nor plea for the down and out;<br\/>Nor specious rot condemning what<br\/>The leaders are about.<br\/>Merely to ask in a casual way<br\/>Of those who chance to read,<br\/>For fairer view, and kinder, too,<br\/>Of the Man Who Didn\u2019t Succeed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>His house is small, his table light;<br\/>His family must endure<br\/>The snubs and sneers of the buccaneers<br\/>Whose debts fall on the poor.<br\/>Yet his is a home and no hotel,<br\/>His wife is a wife, indeed.<br\/>There\u2019s nothing above his children\u2019s love<br\/>To the Man Who Didn\u2019t Succeed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Admitting it\u2019s true that he did not make<br\/>The most of his talents ten,<br\/>He won no pelf nor raised himself<br\/>At the cost of his fellowmen.<br\/>His hands are clean, his heart is white,<br\/>His honor has been his creed\u2014<br\/>Now who are we to say that he<br\/>Is the Man Who Didn\u2019t Succeed?<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Omaha Daily Bee, February 3, 1915.
