{"id":9170,"date":"2023-02-09T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-02-09T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newspaperhistory.com\/?p=9170"},"modified":"2023-02-09T01:00:00","modified_gmt":"2023-02-09T06:00:00","slug":"little-brown-hands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/desperaudio.com\/newspaperpoetry\/little-brown-hands\/","title":{"rendered":"Little Brown Hands"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>From the <a href=\"https:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/lccn\/sn89074405\/1915-02-09\/ed-1\/seq-6\/\">Grand Forks Daily Herald, February 9, 1915<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>They drive home the cows from the pasture<br\/>Up thro\u2019 the long, shady lane,<br\/>Where the quail whistles loud in the wheat field<br\/>That is yellow with ripening grain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>They find in the thick, waving grasses<br\/>Where the scarlet-lipped strawberry grows;<br\/>They gather the earliest snowdrops<br\/>And the first crimson buds of the rose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>They toss the hay in the meadow,<br\/>They gather the elder-bloom white;<br\/>They find where the dusky grapes purple<br\/>In the soft-tinted October light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>They know where the apples hang ripest<br\/>And are sweeter than Italy\u2019s wines;<br\/>They know where the fruit hangs thickest<br\/>On the long, thorny blackberry vines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>They gather the delicate seaweeds,<br\/>And build tiny castles of sand;<br\/>They pick up the beautiful seashells,<br\/>Fairy barks, that have drifted to land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>They wave from the tall, rocking tree-tops,<br\/>Where the oriole\u2019s hammock-nest swings;<br\/>And at night time are folded in slumber<br\/>By a song that a fond mother sings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Those who toil bravely are strongest,<br\/>The humble and poor become great;<br\/>And from those brown-handed children<br\/>Shall grow mighty rulers of state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>The pen of the author and statesman,<br\/>The noble and wise of our land\u2014<br\/>The sword and the chisel and palette<br\/>Shall be held in the little brown hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Grand Forks Daily Herald, February 9, 1915.
