By John Greenleaf Whittier.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Shut in from all the world without,<br\/>We sat the clean winged hearth about,<br\/>Content to let the north wind roar<br\/>In baffled rage at pane and door<br\/>While the red logs before us beat<br\/>The frost line back with tropic heat;<br\/>And ever, when a louder blast<br\/>Shook beam and rafter as it passed,<br\/>The merrier up its roaring draught<br\/>The great throat of the chimney laughed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>The house dog on his paws outspread<br\/>Laid to the fire his drowsy head,<br\/>The cat\u2019s dark silhouette on the wall<br\/>A couchant tiger\u2019s seemed to fall;<br\/>And, for the winter fireside meet,<br\/>Between the andirons\u2019 straddling feet,<br\/>A mug of cider simmering slow,<br\/>The apples sputtered in a row,<br\/>And close at hand, the basket stood<br\/>With nuts from brown October\u2019s wood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From The Birmingham Age Herald, February 12, 1915.
