By Charles Mackay.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>A traveler on a dusty road<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Strewed acorns on the lea;<br\/>And one took root and sprouted up,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And grew into a tree.<br\/>Love sought its shade at even-time,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;To breathe its early vows;<br\/>And Age was pleased, in heights of noon,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;To bask beneath its boughs.<br\/>The dormouse loved its dangling twigs,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The birds sweet music bore\u2014<br\/>It stood a glory in its place,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;A blessing ever more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>A little spring had lost its way<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Amid the grass and fern;<br\/>A passing stranger scooped a well<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Where weary men might turn.<br\/>He walled it in, and hung with care<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;A ladle on the brink;<br\/>He thought not of the deed he did,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;But judged that Toil might drink.<br\/>He passed again, and lo! the well,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;By summer never dried,<br\/>Had cooled ten thousand parched tongues,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And saved a life beside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>A nameless man, amid the crowd,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;That thronged the daily mart,<br\/>Let fall a word of hope and love,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Unstudied from the heart\u2014<br\/>A whisper on the tumult thrown,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;A transitory breath,<br\/>It raised a brother from the dust,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;It saved a soul from death.<br\/>O germ! O fount!
