I sit<br\/>In the twilight and I knit.<br\/>At my ball of soft gray wool<br\/>Two gray kittens gently pull\u2014<br\/>Pulling back my thoughts as well<br\/>From that distant, red-rimmed hell,<br\/>And hot tears the stitches blur<br\/>As I knit a comforter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cComforter\u201d they call it\u2014yet,<br\/>Such it is for my distress,<br\/>For it gives my restless hands<br\/>Blessed work. God understands<br\/>How we women yearn to be<br\/>Doing something ceaselessly\u2014<br\/>Anything but just to wait<br\/>Idly for a clicking gate!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>So I knit this long gray thing<br\/>Which some fearless lad will fling<br\/>Round him in the icy blast,<br\/>With the shrapnel whistling past;<br\/>\u201cComforter\u201d it may be then,<br\/>Like a mother\u2019s touch again,<br\/>And at last, not gray, but red,<br\/>Be a pillow for the dead!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Rock Island Argus, February 22, 1915.
