By Dana Burnet.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>The Starving Men they walk the dusk,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;With hunger in their eyes.<br\/>To them a Lighted House is like<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;A lamp of Paradise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>It is the Window in the dusk<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;That marks the drifter\u2019s coast;<br\/>It is the thought of Love and Light<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;That mocks the drifter most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Now I have been a Starving Man<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And walked the winter dusk;<br\/>And I have known how life may be<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;A Heaven and a Husk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>The Fainting Hands they pulled my sleeve,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And bade me curse the Light.<br\/>But I had seen a Rich Man\u2019s face<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;That looked into the night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>A hungry face, a brother face,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;That stared into the gloom,<br\/>And starved for Life and starved for Love<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Within a lighted room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From The Birmingham Age Herald, February 23, 1915.
