By Philander Johnson.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat constitues \u2018Society?\u2019\u201d inquired the Man from Mars;<br\/>\u201cIs it a gathering of wealth and intellectual stars?\u201d<br\/>\u201cHo! ho!\u201d replied the rustic youth who wore a grin serene,<br\/>\u201cSociety\u2019s our Mayday dance upon the village green.\u201d<br\/>\u201cNot so,\u201d the housemaid gaily said, \u201cThat isn\u2019t it at all.<br\/>To find society, you should attend the coachman\u2019s ball.\u201d<br\/>The serious woman said, \u201cIf for society you search,<br\/>You\u2019ll find the very best there is by coming to my church.\u201d<br\/>The studious one remarked, \u201cThe very highest social force<br\/>You may discover if you will attend our lecture course.\u201d<br\/>And some said that society was made for games of chance,<br\/>And others mentioned art and brains and beauty and the dance.<br\/>The Man from Mars looked puzzled and remarked, \u201cIt seems to me<br\/>Society is all mankind, including even me;<br\/>And each of us looks just beyond his own familiar sphere;<br\/>The impulse is what made me leave my home and come down here.<br\/>Society\u2019s a picture which we fill with fays and elves<br\/>And, when we meet them, find that they are persons like ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Evening Star, February 27, 1915.
