{"id":9209,"date":"2023-03-04T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-03-04T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newspaperhistory.com\/?p=9209"},"modified":"2023-03-04T01:00:00","modified_gmt":"2023-03-04T06:00:00","slug":"to-a-false-patriot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/desperaudio.com\/newspaperpoetry\/to-a-false-patriot\/","title":{"rendered":"To a False Patriot"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>From the <a href=\"https:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/lccn\/sn84031081\/1915-03-04\/ed-1\/seq-6\/\">Albuquerque Morning Journal, March 4, 1915<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>He came obedient to the call;<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;He might have shirked, like half his mates<br\/>Who, while their comrades fight and fall<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Still go to swell the football gates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>And you, a patriot in your prime,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;You waved a flag above his head<br\/>And hoped he\u2019d have a high old time<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And slapped him on the back and said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ll show \u2018em what we British are!<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Give us your hand, old pal, to shake!\u201d<br\/>And took him round from bar to bar<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And made him drink\u2014for England\u2019s sake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s how you helped him. Yesterday<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Clear-eyed and earnest, keen and hard,<br\/>He held himself the soldier\u2019s way\u2014<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And now they\u2019ve got him under guard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>That doesn\u2019t hurt you; you\u2019re all right.<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Your easy conscience takes no blame,<br\/>But he, poor boy, with morning\u2019s light,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;He eats his heart out, sick with shame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s that to you?
