By Alfred Noyes.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Thou, whose deep ways are in the sea,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Whose footsteps are not known,<br\/>Tonight a world that turned from Thee<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Is waiting\u2014at Thy Throne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>The towering Babels that we raised<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Where scoffing sophists brawl,<br\/>The little Antichrists we praised\u2014<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The night is on them all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>The fool hath said * * * The fool hath said  * * *<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And we, who deemed him wise,<br\/>We who believed that Thou wast dead,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;How should we seek Thine eyes?<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>How should we seek to Thee for power<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Who scorned Thee yesterday?<br\/>How should we kneel in this dread hour?<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Lord, teach us how to pray!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Grant us the single heart once more<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;That mocks no sacred thing;<br\/>The Sword of Truth our fathers wore<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;When Thou wast Lord and King.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Let darkness unto darkness tell<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Our deep, unspoken prayer;<br\/>For, while our souls in darkness dwell,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;We know that Thou art there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Albuquerque Morning Journal, March 10, 1915.
