By Jack Carter.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>I am sitting alone in the gloaming<br\/>With the firelight flickering low,<br\/>And the sky so dark and lowering<br\/>Is tinged by the sun\u2019s red glow,<br\/>And the many ships that I freighted,<br\/>With hopes too bright to last<br\/>How they haunt me, haunt me, haunt me,<br\/>Those wrecks of the lone dead past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s the ship that I launched at twenty\u2014<br\/>It was laden with thoughts sublime.<br\/>I would plan out the lives of nations,<br\/>When my life reached its summer time.<br\/>I would see that all strife and warfare,<br\/>And oppressions be swept from the deck.<br\/>Alas, for the dreary eventide,<br\/>My ship came home a wreck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Then I sent out another vessel,<br\/>And the cargo it carried was love.<br\/>There was home and a wife and children,<br\/>And the bliss was from heaven above.<br\/>But the joys could not last forever<br\/>And the storm clouds rose on her lea.<br\/>She ran on the rocks, they crushed her,<br\/>And she sank down into the sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Once more I sent out a vessel,<br\/>It was trim from stem to stern.<br\/>It went for to bring me riches,<br\/>And with orders to never return<br\/>Till \u2019twas full of all precious substance,<br\/>And its wake left a golden track.<br\/>A crash, and t\u2019was gone forever.<br\/>Not even a plank came back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>But there\u2019s one came back from the shadows<br\/>Out of all my ships just one\u2014<br\/>Shall I tell you the cargo it brought me?<br\/>It was only the deeds I had done<br\/>For the troubled, the suffering, the outcast;<br\/>I\u2019d forgotten them all long ago.<br\/>The whisper from lips just passing,<br\/>And the sad, sad tale of woe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>A life to the one who had fallen,<br\/>A striving to ease the pain.<br\/>Just bread cast out on the waters,<br\/>And it all came back again.<br\/>And you never can buy this vessel.<br\/>The wealth of the whole wide world<br\/>Cannot pilot it out of the harbor<br\/>For its sails and its flag are furled.<br\/><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Grand Forks Daily Herald, March 13, 1915.
