{"id":9230,"date":"2023-03-17T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-03-17T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newspaperhistory.com\/?p=9230"},"modified":"2023-03-17T01:00:00","modified_gmt":"2023-03-17T05:00:00","slug":"st-patricks-day-without-shamrocks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/desperaudio.com\/newspaperpoetry\/st-patricks-day-without-shamrocks\/","title":{"rendered":"St. Patrick\u2019s Day Without Shamrocks"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>From <a href=\"https:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/lccn\/sn83030272\/1915-03-17\/ed-1\/seq-6\/\">The Sun, March 17, 1915<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>We sought them \u2018neath the snowflakes<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And o\u2019er all the frosty ground,<br\/>But no leaflet like the shamrock<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;On St. Patrick\u2019s Day we found.<br\/>And our hearts went back to Erin,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;To her dewy vales and hills,<br\/>Where the shamrock twines and clusters<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;O\u2019er the fields and by the rills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Oh, no more, no more my country<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Shall thy loving daughter lay<br\/>Her head upon thy bosom<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;While she weeps her tears away;<br\/>There the primrose and the daisy<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Bloom as in the days of old,<br\/>And the violet comes in purple<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And the buttercup in gold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Kildare\u2019s broad fields are fragrant<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;With the shamrock\u2019s breath today.<br\/>Shamrocks bloom from Clare to Antrim,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;From Killarney to Lough Neagh;<br\/>And they speak of Patrick\u2019s preaching<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;With a quiet, voiceless lore,<br\/>And they breathe of faith and heaven<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;All the trefoiled island o\u2019er.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Wandering listless by the Liffey,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Stoop and pluck the shamrock green;<br\/>What an emblem plain and simple<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Of the one true faith is seen;<br\/>Of the Father and the Spirit<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Speaks the mystic triune leaf,<br\/>Of the Son in anguish dying<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;On the Cross in love and grief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Well humility may choose it<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;For an emblem fair and meet,<br\/>Close beside the poorest cabin<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;It is pouring fragrance sweet.<br\/>Modest is our darling shamrock,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Useful, charitable, kind,<br\/>Clothing mean, deserted places<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;With its green leaves intertwined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Many a lesson thus it teaches,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Many a wholesome thought recalls,<br\/>Many a teardrop all unbidden<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;To its cherished memory falls;<br\/>Nor the green of Erin\u2019s banner<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Still must stir the Irish heart,<br\/>Which in Erin\u2019s many sorrows<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Ever, ever must have part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Oh be true, be true to Erin,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;True to faith and true to God,<br\/>To St. Patrick, His apostle,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Who redeemed our native sod.<br\/>Never more her mystic emblem<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;In green Erin may you see,<br\/>Let the faith it symbolizes<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Be the dearer unto thee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From The Sun, March 17, 1915.
