Coyle.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Let the winds of the world make answer!<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;North, south, and east and west;<br\/>\u201cWherever there\u2019s wealth to covet,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Or land that can be possessed;<br\/>Wherever are savage races<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;To cozen, coerce and scare,<br\/>Ye shall find the vaunted ensign:<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;For the English flag is there!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Aye, it waves o\u2019er the blazing hovels<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Whence African victims fly,<br\/>To be shot by explosive bullets,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Or to wretchedly starve and die;<br\/>And where the beachcomber harries<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The isles of the Southern sea,<br\/>At the peak of his hellish vessels,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;\u2019Tis the English flag flies free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>The Maori full oft have cursed it<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;With his bitterest dying breath;<br\/>And the Arab has hissed his hatred<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;As he spits at its folds in death.<br\/>The hapless fellah has feared it<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;On Tel-el-Kebir\u2019s parched plain,<br\/>And the Zulu\u2019s blood has stained it<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;With a deep indelible stain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>It has floated o\u2019er scenes of pillage<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And has flaunted o\u2019er deeds of shame;<br\/>It has waved o\u2019er the fell marauder<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;As he ravished with sword and flame;<br\/>It has looked upon ruthless slaughter,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And massacres dire and grim;<br\/>It has heard the shrieks of the victims<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Drown even the Jingo hymn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Where is the flag of England?<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Seek the lands where the natives rot;<br\/>Where decay and assured extinction<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Must soon be the peoples\u2019 lot.<br\/>Go, search for the once glad islands,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Where diseases and death are rife,<br\/>And the greed of a callous commerce<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Now fattens on human life!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Where is the flag of England?<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Go, sail where rich galleons come<br\/>With shoddy and \u201cloaded\u201d cottons,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And beer, and Bibles and rum!<br\/>Go too, where brute force has triumphed,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And hypocrisy makes its lair;<br\/>And your question will find its answer,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;For the flag of England is there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From The Birmingham Age Herald, March 22, 1915.
