{"id":9244,"date":"2023-03-31T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-03-31T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newspaperhistory.com\/?p=9244"},"modified":"2023-03-31T01:00:00","modified_gmt":"2023-03-31T05:00:00","slug":"the-heart-of-a-woman","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/desperaudio.com\/newspaperpoetry\/the-heart-of-a-woman\/","title":{"rendered":"The Heart of a Woman"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>From the <a href=\"https:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/lccn\/sn92053934\/1915-03-31\/ed-1\/seq-4\/\">Rock Island Argus, March 31, 1915<\/a>. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Laughter and sunshine and story,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Beauty and sweetness and trust;<br\/>Courage and grandeur and glory,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Shadow and darkness and dust\u2014<br\/>All things of light and of loving<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The heart of a woman contains,<br\/>Grand virtues, great sweetness and sorrows,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Peace, happiness, passion and pains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>One moment it blooms like a garden<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;With every sweet blossom life knows,<br\/>A vale of the peace of the ages,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;A pathway through violet and rose\u2014<br\/>And then o\u2019er the darkness and doubting<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The wings of a storm sweep the skies,<br\/>And the garden is tossed in the tempest,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And the vale in a dark ruin lies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>One moment so pitiful, tender,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And then all the rage and the hate<br\/>Fill its beating with infinite shadows<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;As it raves against infinite fate.<br\/>One moment so true and so loving,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;So clinging and gentle and sweet,<br\/>All the song of life sweeping its gamut,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Every blossom of life in its beat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>And yet, with all changing and travail,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;All sorrow and aching and cross,<br\/>All sunshine today, then tomorrow<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Cast down in the grief of some loss;<br\/>And yet with its battle and thunder,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Its April of showers and shine,<br\/>God give me the heart of a woman<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And take all the rest that is mine!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Rock Island Argus, March 31, 1915.
