By Victor Hugo.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Like the tiny glint of light piercing through the dusty gloom<br\/>Comes her little laughing face through the shadows of my room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>And my pen forgets its way as it hears the patt\u2019ring tread<br\/>While her prattling treble tones chase the thought from out my head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>She is queen and I her slave, one who loves her and obeys<br\/>For she rules her world of home with imperious baby ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>In she dances, calls me \u201cDear!\u201d turns the pages of my books<br\/>Thrones herself upon my knee, takes my pen with laughing looks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Makes disorder reign supreme, turns my papers upside down,<br\/>Draws me cabalistic signs, safe from fear of any frown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Crumples all my verses up, pleased to hear the crackling sound;<br\/>Makes them into balls, and then\u2014flings them all upon the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Suddenly she flits away, leaving me alone again<br\/>With a warmth about my heart, and a brighter, clearer brain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>And although the thoughts return that her coming drove away<br\/>The remembrance of her laugh lingers with me through the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>And it chances, as I write, I may take a crumpled sheet<br\/>On which, God knoweth why! read my fancies twice as sweet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Albuquerque Morning Journal, April 9, 1915.
