{"id":9265,"date":"2023-04-15T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-04-15T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newspaperhistory.com\/?p=9265"},"modified":"2023-04-15T01:00:00","modified_gmt":"2023-04-15T05:00:00","slug":"a-gentlemans-trade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/desperaudio.com\/newspaperpoetry\/a-gentlemans-trade\/","title":{"rendered":"A Gentleman\u2019s Trade"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>From the <a href=\"https:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/lccn\/sn84031081\/1915-04-15\/ed-1\/seq-6\/\">Albuquerque Morning Journal, April 15, 1915<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>When gentlemen wearied of castle and court<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;In kingdoms that flourished of yore,<br\/>They deemed it a pleasant and elegant sport<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;To mix for a while in war,<br\/>And skill with the mace and the crossbow and lance\u2014<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Good well-seasoned killing ability\u2014<br\/>Enrolled a man\u2019s name on the scroll of romance<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;As a person of lofty gentility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>When guns were invented the man who could aim<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;With a steady and murderous eye<br\/>Was the man who excelled in the gentleman\u2019s game<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And whose rank was uncommonly high.<br\/>Nobility rated according as men<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;In murder grew cunning and keen;<br\/>The gentle killed five and the gentler killed ten,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;While the gentlest killed twelve or fifteen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>And now, when the howitzers mow down a crowd<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;With a single discharge of a shell,<br\/>The gentlemen soldiers should feel very proud<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;For they seem to be doing quite well.<br\/>When sometimes a couple of thousand or more<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Are slaughtered by one cannonade,<br\/>It can\u2019t be denied that the business of war<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Is still a real gentleman\u2019s trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Albuquerque Morning Journal, April 15, 1915.
