Sangster.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>If I had known in the morning<br\/>How wearily all the day<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The words unkind<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Would trouble my mind<br\/>I said when you went away,<br\/>I had been more careful, darling<br\/>Nor given you needless pain;<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;But we vex our own<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;With look and tone<br\/>We might never take back again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>For though in the quiet evening<br\/>You may give me the kiss of peace,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Yet it may be<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;That never for me<br\/>The pain of the heart should cease.<br\/>How many go forth in the morning<br\/>That never come home at night;<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And hearts have broken<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;For harsh words spoken<br\/>That sorrow can ne\u2019er set right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>We have careful thoughts for the stranger,<br\/>And smiles for the sometimes guest,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;But oft for our own<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The bitter tone<br\/>Though we love our own the best.<br\/>Ah, lips with the curve impatient,<br\/>Ah, brow with that look of scorn<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;\u2018Twere a cruel fate<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Were the night too late<br\/>To undo the work of the morn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Newark Evening Star, April 20, 1915.
