{"id":9279,"date":"2023-04-28T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-04-28T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newspaperhistory.com\/?p=9279"},"modified":"2023-04-28T01:00:00","modified_gmt":"2023-04-28T05:00:00","slug":"reply-to-when-you-and-i-were-young-maggie","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/desperaudio.com\/newspaperpoetry\/reply-to-when-you-and-i-were-young-maggie\/","title":{"rendered":"Reply to When You and I Were Young, Maggie"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>From the <a href=\"https:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/lccn\/sn91064011\/1915-04-28\/ed-1\/seq-11\/\">Newark Evening Star, April 28, 1915<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>The past we can never recall,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;It fled with our youth long ago;<br\/>But its joys and its memories all<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Are ours while we linger below;<br\/>The murmuring brook may be dry,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And hushed be the voice of the mill,<br\/>But the songs that they sang cannot die<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;While pleasures of memory thrill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>And daisies will deck the green vale<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And bird-notes hang over the hill,<br\/>And other lips tell the sweet tale,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;When we shall be silent and still.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>The green above is gone, it is true,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;But broad blades of bright waving corn<br\/>Are gemmed with bright diamonds of dew<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Where blithesome birds greeted the morn;<br\/>The corn is as green as the grove,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The birds sing as sweetly as then,<br\/>And we live the past o\u2019er in our love<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And feel all its pleasures again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>In that city so silent and lone,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Where loved ones so peacefully sleep,<br\/>There lies a dear darling, our own,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Whom angels have taken to keep.<br\/>The roses that blossom and fall,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And cover her sunny brown hair,<br\/>Sweet fragrance will shed over all,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;When we shall be slumbering there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Say not we are feeble with age,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;For age cannot lessen our love.<br\/>This earth-life is but for a span,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Eternity waits us above.<br\/>The trials of life we have borne,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;With trustfulness, patience and truth;<br\/>The past let us never more mourn,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;There\u2019s a realm of perennial youth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Newark Evening Star, April 28, 1915.
