By David.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Poor, tired little shoes! Uncomplaining<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;They give their life to fulfill<br\/>The orders and calls and commandments<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Of feet that never are still.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>They tramp o\u2019er the hills and the meadows,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And mud is their chief delight;<br\/>They were trim and shining this morning,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Now they are a woeful sight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>They are scuffed and muddy and dingy,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Their tongues hang panting for breath;<br\/>For the little feet that wear them<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Have run them almost to death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>And while they are busy destroying,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I\u2019m busy finding a way<br\/>To buy new shoes on the morrow,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;To replace the ones of today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>For new shoes, prized as a treasure<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Today, tomorrow are old.<br\/>But at sight of innocent faces,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I have not the heart to scold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Though each year they\u2019re a bit larger,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;A cost just a trifle more;<br\/>And each year they wear a bit faster<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Than they did the year before;<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>For the little feet in the future<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Will lose their desire for play,<br\/>And soberly walk in the highways<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;With no longing or wish to stray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>So I turn to my work with new purpose,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And new courage for the fight;<br\/>And through blinding tears, as I view them,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Those shoes are a beautiful sight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Then I gather them up with rapture,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And thank the Lord with a will,<br\/>For the rough little shoes, worn and shabby,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And the feet that never are still.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Omaha Daily Bee, April 29, 1915.
