By Ella Wheeler Wilcox.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Laugh, and the world laughs with you,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Weep, and you weep alone.<br\/>This odd old earth must borrow its mirth,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;It has trouble enough of its own.<br\/>Sing, and the hills will answer.<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Sigh, and it is lost on the air.<br\/>The echoes rebound to a joyful sound<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;But they shrink from voicing care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Rejoice, and men will seek you,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Grieve and they turn to go;<br\/>They want full measure of your pleasure,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;But they do not want your woe.<br\/>Be glad, and your friends are many,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Be sad, and you lose them all.<br\/>There are none to decline your nectar\u2019d wine,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;But alone you must drink life\u2019s gall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Feast and your halls are crowded,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Fast, and the world goes by\u2014<br\/>Forget and forgive, it will help you to live,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;But no man can help you to die.<br\/>There is room in the halls of pleasure<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;For a long and lordly train,<br\/>But one by one we must all march on<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Thro\u2019 the narrow aisle of pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Newark Evening Star, April 30, 1915.
