{"id":9283,"date":"2023-05-02T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-05-02T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newspaperhistory.com\/?p=9283"},"modified":"2023-05-02T01:00:00","modified_gmt":"2023-05-02T05:00:00","slug":"the-non-combatants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/desperaudio.com\/newspaperpoetry\/the-non-combatants\/","title":{"rendered":"The Non-Combatants"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>From <a href=\"https:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/lccn\/sn83030272\/1915-05-02\/ed-1\/seq-10\/\">The Sun, May 2, 1915<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Why should we mourn that shot and shell<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Are sweeping lives away<br\/>When each man has his private hell<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And dies anew each day?<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Upon the bloody field where death<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;His thundering summons calls,<br\/>The men who face the cannon\u2019s breath<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;May win to glory\u2019s halls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Mixed in that elemental strife<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Perhaps they may forget<br\/>The heartaches that we bear through life,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The sorrow, the regret.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Sweeter by far the lot they choose<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Than ours who stay behind,<br\/>Who find what we would gain we lose,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Unbound what we would bind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>We envy them the deaths they die,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Our hearts must die each day,<br\/>We greet with sad and hopeless eye<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Each morn\u2019s returning ray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>They fall, to live forever more<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;In glory\u2019s brightest page,<br\/>We live in sorrow to deplore<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The bars around our cage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>The gods on high, if gods there be<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;To comfort or condemn,<br\/>Shall, if they judge with equity,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Lament for us, not them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From The Sun, May 2, 1915.
