{"id":9311,"date":"2023-05-11T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-05-11T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newspaperhistory.com\/?p=9311"},"modified":"2023-05-11T01:00:00","modified_gmt":"2023-05-11T05:00:00","slug":"poor-archery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/desperaudio.com\/newspaperpoetry\/poor-archery\/","title":{"rendered":"Poor Archery"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>From the <a href=\"https:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/lccn\/sn83045389\/1915-05-11\/ed-1\/seq-6\/\">Richmond Times Dispatch, May 11, 1915<\/a>. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Dan Cupid once a-scouting went,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;To search for victims, cause commotion;<br\/>The bow that wings his shafts was bent,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The shafts tipped with love\u2019s fateful potion,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And when a shaft sped from that bow<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;\u2019Twas bound to lay somebody low.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>To right and left this archer mad<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Dispatched his messengers of worry,<br\/>Nor cared he if his aim was bad,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;For Cupid\u2019s always in a hurry.<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;\u201cIf age, not youth, receive a dart,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Why then,\u201d quoth he, \u201clet old age smart.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>His marksmanship was much at fault,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;For hearts that scorned him heard love singing,<br\/>While hearts left bare to his assault\u2014<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;That begged the blow that he was bringing\u2014<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Escaped all wounds and mourned that he<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Should leave them whole and fancy free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps you\u2019ve wondered in what way<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Dan Cupid\u2019s victims are selected;<br\/>Perhaps you\u2019ve thought sometimes that they<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Had not been properly inspected.<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Well, this is why: Dan banks on chance<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And speeds his darts without a glance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Richmond Times Dispatch, May 11, 1915.
