{"id":9316,"date":"2023-05-16T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-05-16T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newspaperhistory.com\/?p=9316"},"modified":"2023-05-16T01:00:00","modified_gmt":"2023-05-16T05:00:00","slug":"the-dog","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/desperaudio.com\/newspaperpoetry\/the-dog\/","title":{"rendered":"The Dog"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>From the <a href=\"https:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/lccn\/sn84031081\/1915-05-16\/ed-1\/seq-10\/\">Albuquerque Morning Journal, May 16, 1915<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve never known a dog to wag<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;His tail in glee he didn\u2019t feel,<br\/>Nor quit his old-time friend to tag<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;At some more influential heel.<br\/>The yellowest cur I ever knew<br\/>Was to the boy who loved him true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve never known a dog to show<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Half-way devotion to his friend,<br\/>To seek a kinder man to know<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Or richer, but unto the end<br\/>The humblest dog I ever knew<br\/>Was, to the man that loved him, true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve never known a dog to fake<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Affection for a present gain,<br\/>A false display of love to make,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Some little favor to attain.<br\/>I\u2019ve never known a Prince or Spot<br\/>That seemed to be what he was not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>But I have known a dog to fight<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;With all his strength to shield a friend<br\/>And, whether wrong or whether right,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;To stick with him until the end.<br\/>And I have known a dog to lick<br\/>The hand of him that men would kick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>And I have known a dog to bear<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Starvation\u2019s pangs from day to day<br\/>With him who had been glad to share<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;His bread and meat along the way.<br\/>No dog, however mean or rude,<br\/>Is guilty of ingratitude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>The dog is listed with the dumb,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;No voice has he to speak his creed,<br\/>His messages to humans come<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;By faithful conduct and by deed.<br\/>He shows, as seldom mortals do,<br\/>A high ideal of being true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Albuquerque Morning Journal, May 16, 1915.
