By Lance Hendrix.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>He marches away in his slumbers,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;With a gay, romantic heart,<br\/>And thinks of the coming battles<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;In which he will soon take part.<br\/>He thinks of a mother he\u2019s leaving,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And a sister so bonny and gay,<br\/>But his thoughts are most of another,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;His beautiful, dark-eyed May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Again he\u2019s with Lee in Virginia,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Where the Rappahannock flows,<br\/>And forming in line of battle<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;To fight the northern foes.<br\/>His heart is again rent with passion,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;His mind is fiery with hate;<br\/>He rushes into the battle,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Leaving his safety to fate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>He sees the flag of the southland<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Flaunt proudly in the breeze,<br\/>And hears the shouts of the soldiers<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Ringing in all the trees.<br\/>He sees the opposing enemy<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Retire from the field in defeat,<br\/>And a thrill runs through his body<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;From his head to the sole of his feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>The scene is removed in a moment<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;To another battle field,<br\/>Where the fight has raged for hours,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And neither side will yield.<br\/>Again the vision takes him<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;To a field that\u2019s farther away,<br\/>Where the men in blue are victorious,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And slowly retreat the gray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Very true and vivid<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Do all those battles seem.<br\/>But, alas! he wakes to find<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;That he\u2019s only had a dream.<br\/>A little maid before him,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Her head a mass of gold,<br\/>Whispers softly, \u201cGrandfather dear,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Your tea is getting cold.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From The Birmingham Age Herald, May 19, 1915.
