{"id":9330,"date":"2023-05-21T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-05-21T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newspaperhistory.com\/?p=9330"},"modified":"2023-05-21T01:00:00","modified_gmt":"2023-05-21T05:00:00","slug":"the-home-team","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/desperaudio.com\/newspaperpoetry\/the-home-team\/","title":{"rendered":"The Home Team"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>From the <a href=\"https:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/lccn\/sn99021999\/1915-05-21\/ed-1\/seq-6\/\">Omaha Daily Bee, May 21, 1915<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>I hate to see the home team lose;<br\/>A contest dropped gives me blues;<br\/>But when they win\u2014they sometimes do!<br\/>I go home happy, same as you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Yet, after all, why should I care<br\/>Because nine men from everywhere\u2014<br\/>Except the town in which I live\u2014<br\/>Have acted as a human sieve<br\/>Through which the red-hot ones have poured<br\/>Like water through a leaky gourd?<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>And why should I bemoan the fact<br\/>That nine strong men have whacked and whacked<br\/>The summer air in vain desire<br\/>To make a showing for their hire?<br\/>Nine men I scarcely know by sight<br\/>And might not recognize tonight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Why mourn because some other town<br\/>Has scoured the earth and found one Brown<br\/>Who throws a zigzag ball that jolts<br\/>Like lubricated thunderbolts,<br\/>While our man\u2019s curves drift o\u2019er the plate<br\/>In manner tempting unto fate?<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Yea, verily, why should I fret?<br\/>\u2019Tis naught to me, and yet\u2014and yet<br\/>If you\u2019d but seen the awful way<br\/>In which our team behaved today!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Omaha Daily Bee, May 21, 1915.
