{"id":9332,"date":"2023-05-23T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-05-23T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newspaperhistory.com\/?p=9332"},"modified":"2023-05-23T01:00:00","modified_gmt":"2023-05-23T05:00:00","slug":"gaining-by-giving","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/desperaudio.com\/newspaperpoetry\/gaining-by-giving\/","title":{"rendered":"Gaining by Giving"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>From <a href=\"https:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/lccn\/sn85038485\/1915-05-23\/ed-1\/seq-42\/\">The Birmingham Age Herald, May 23, 1915<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>You who\u2019re healthy, you who\u2019re wealthy, you are lucky, I\u2019ll agree,<br\/>But I wonder if you\u2019re happy as you\u2019d really like to be.<br\/>Nay, I know, if you are selfish, with a selfish aim and end,<br\/>You\u2019re less happy than the beggar who is sharing with a friend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>All the money you have hidden on your little, private shelf<br\/>Will procure you little joy, if it\u2019s only for yourself.<br\/>For the moral law is written on each real, human heart<br\/>That our happiness is measured by the shared\u2014not hoarded part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Joy\u2019s strange, and though we seek it, yet we seldom understand<br\/>Why it smilingly eludes us as we grasp with selfish hand.<br\/>But we\u2019re yet to learn, most of us, that it is as God intends\u2014<br\/>That our joy grows the greater as we give it to our friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>For, as sure as you are living, and as sure as you will die,<br\/>Joy never was intended on some hidden shelf to lie.<br\/>And you\u2019ll never know the joy that is lasting, deep and true<br\/>\u2018Till you\u2019ve shared, in love with others, that which God has given you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From The Birmingham Age Herald, May 23, 1915.
