Soon, with sneer and shout,<br\/>We wildly waved our arms about,<br\/>And heated phrases catapulted,<br\/>Till each the other had insulted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Our quarrel didn\u2019t end the strife,<br\/>Nor saved a single soldier\u2019s life;<br\/>Our acid, violent verbosity<br\/>Annulled no single small atrocity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>The sufferings of the maimed and torn,<br\/>For all our talk, must still be borne;<br\/>Our most excited declarations<br\/>Deterred no whit the warring nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>For all we raged\u2014nay, almost fought\u2014<br\/>This change is all our wrangle wrought:<br\/>The love each cherished for his brother<br\/>Is gone, and now we hate each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the New York Tribune, May 28, 1915.
