By Grantland Rice.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Two out\u2014and the bases full\u2014<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Three runs to win and two to tie;<br\/>And then, amid the boding lull,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Looms Crawford of the batting eye;<br\/>I watch the pitcher writhe and whirl<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And shoot one from his mounded pen\u2014<br\/>I see the white pill dart and curl<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;As Crawford\u2019s bludgeon swings\u2014and then\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>In that one moment through the stands<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;There runs\u2014before the groans and cheers\u2014<br\/>The taut grip of ten thousand hands\u2014<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The pulse leap of a thousand years;<br\/>The one great throbbing human call<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Above all science, war or love,<br\/>As crashing bat meets speeding ball<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Or speeding ball meets waiting glove.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Here end the sorrows of the race\u2014<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;All want and wretchedness and crime;<br\/>Where Care must seek another place\u2014<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Where Sin must bide another time;<br\/>Here where the heart\u2019s wiped clean and dry\u2014<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The drudge soul lifted from the pit<br\/>For those who wait for the reply\u2014<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;A strike-out\u2014or a two-base hit?<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Evening Public Ledger, May 29, 1915.
